The Experimental Scientific Station La Peñita

The Experimental Scientific Station is located in the community of La Peñita, Metetí, Darién. This unique enclave borders the Chucunaque River, the most important river in Darién, and the Emberá Wounaan Comarca. Covering a total of 88 hectares, this space is dedicated to conducting experimental studies on the impact of sustainable agricultural and livestock practices on biodiversity, as well as on animal and human health.

Home to the Carson Center for Health and Ecosystem Research

The station is home to the Carson Center for Health and Ecosystem Research, which focuses on the intersection of health, ecology and sustainable agricultural practices. This center has state-of-the-art research laboratory areas and residences capable of simultaneously housing approximately 30 scientists. These facilities allow for intense
research and collaborative activity, enhancing significant advances in the field of agroecology and health.

Objectives and activities:

• Applied research: La Peñita is dedicated to studying how sustainable agricultural and livestock practices affect local biodiversity and the health of ecosystems and human and animal communities.


• AgroEcoScientific Tourism: Designed to educate and raise awareness in visitors about the importance of agroecology and scientific research in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural development.


• Conservation and sustainability: Through its projects, the station seeks to promote environmental conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.


• Education and training: The station not only engages in research, but also offers educational and training programs for students, scientists and members of the local community.


• Knowledge sharing: Facilitates the exchange of knowledge between scientists from different disciplines and countries, fostering a global network of collaboration.
