What is Planetary Health?

Planetary Health is a concept that addresses the health of human populations in relation to the health of the planet, recognizing that environmental degradation, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, directly affects human health.

In contrast, One Health focuses on the interconnectedness between human, animal and environmental health, focusing on zoonotic diseases and interdisciplinary collaboration to address public health issues. While One Health focuses on the interaction between these three domains, Planetary Health broadens the focus to global dynamics that impact health and well-being in a broader, more sustainable context.

What is One-Health?

One Health is an interdisciplinary approach that recognizes the connection between human health, animal health and environmental health. This concept is based on the idea that the well-being of people, animals and ecosystems is interrelated, and that health problems in one of these domains can affect the others.

The One Health approach seeks to foster collaboration among diverse disciplines, such as medicine, veterinary medicine, ecology, and public health, to address global health issues such as zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans), antimicrobial resistance, and the impact of climate change on health. This model promotes joint research and action to improve health and well-being at all levels.
